BRAEHEAD

Over a hectare of land has been leased to Braehead Community Council in Stirling to create one of the largest community gardens in Scotland.

I was asked to create the design, which includes 100 raised beds, polytunnels, communal storage facilities, petanque court and car parking, with wheelchair access throughout.

The generous size of the site has also made it possible to design-in significant wildlife habitat such as a surrounding native hedge, birch groves and a nature trail.

The garden won the UK's top Designing for Community Space award from the Society of Garden Designers. The judges said: “This is a fantastic example of the type of community project which brings people together, gives them what they need and showcases how designers can help to take garden design into disadvantaged areas”.
